Luis Abinader has put the cost of damage wreaked by Hurricane Fiona, which made landfall in the Dominican Republic on 19 September, at over RD$20bn (U$372.4m). In response, President Abinader declared disaster zones for the provinces of La Altagracia, La Romana, El Seibo, Samana, Hato Mayor, María Trinidad Sánchez, Duarte and Monte Plata, which authorises several ministries and government institutions to carry out procurement processes of goods, services and works through exceptional processes for emergency cases. President Abinader said yesterday that there had been a “
significant advance” in repairs to housing affected, provision of food, and restoration of basic services. He said that over the weekend, work had been carried out on 4,653 homes – nearly 50% of those affected and that 97% of energy services had been re-established in the most affected areas while 91% of water services had been restored. He said that new measures would be announced on 29 September in support of the agricultural sector to recover production and land damaged.
