MEXICO: DTO violence engulfs Mexico

For four days in August, a wave of violence perpetrated by drug trafficking organisations (DTOs) swept across western and north-western Mexico. The violence caused panic among residents, with vehicles set ablaze, commercial establishments attacked and public spaces ransacked. The incidents highlighted the flaws in the public security strategy of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s government and cemented ongoing doubts around its efficacy – doubts reinforced by the occurrence of similar acts in Zacatecas state just weeks later. Despite this, the government maintains that its security policies are effective and that the violence that plagued Mexico’s past is in decline.
