NICARAGUA: Tensions deepen with EU and US

Over the past week Nicaragua’s government led by President Daniel Ortega has ejected the ambassador of the European Union (EU), Bettina Muscheidt, refused entry to the US nominee for envoy to Managua, Hugo Rodriguez, and severed ties with the Netherlands. This unravelling of diplomatic relations is the latest fallout of the Ortega government’s ongoing crackdown on its critics and dismantling of democratic institutions and the response to it by the international community.
