GUATEMALA: TSE stokes transparency concerns ahead of elections

With Guatemala’s electoral authority (TSE) due to officially call the June 2023 general elections at the start of next year, 13 civil-society groups have recently flagged up anomalies in the process for contracting software and technology for the electoral process. The integrity of the TSE is likely to face particular scrutiny amid existing concerns about democracy and the current backsliding in corruption and transparency under the current conservative Vamos government led by President Alejandro Giammattei, who is constitutionally barred from seeking a further four-year term.
