*Mexico’s President
Andrés Manuel López Obrador has announced the appointment of
Raquel Buenrostro Sánchez as the new federal economy minister. López Obrador stated that Buenrostro was “
an exemplary public servant” in whom the government had
“every confidence”. Buenrostro has more than 25 years of experience in the public sector, most recently serving as the head of Mexico’s tax authority (SAT) (2020-2022), where she obtained recognition from López Obrador’s government for her fiscal policy in response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and increase in tax revenue. Buenrostro replaces
Tatiana Clouthier, who
announced her resignation on 6 October in a seemingly abrupt manner, sparking speculations around the reasons for her departure. Both Clouthier and López Obrador have denied she left on bad terms. Buenrostro will now lead efforts to resolve
the dispute settlement consultations filed by the US and Canada under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on regional trade in relation to Mexico’s energy policy.
