MEXICO: Shake-up at the economy ministry

In an emotional address on 6 October, Mexico’s Economy Minister Tatiana Clouthier Carillo announced her resignation, effective immediately. The seemingly abrupt departure came at a critical juncture in dispute settlement talks with the US over Mexico’s energy policy, which Clouthier was co-leading with Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard. This, along with the vague explanation for her resignation and the key role Clouthier has held within President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s political project, have prompted speculation around the true motivation for her departure.
