In brief: Argentina’s agricultural lobby demands response to drought

*Sociedad Rural Argentina (SRA), one of Argentina’s four main agricultural organisations, has issued a statement expressing concern about drought and resultant crop losses. SRA president Nicolás Pino complained that neither the national nor provincial governments are treating the matter “with the importance that the situation merits”. He said that producers need “modern tools” to combat these difficulties and called on the government for tax relief to help producers. Also yesterday Argentina’s agriculture minister, Juan José Bahillo, expressed concern about the impact of drought on wheat although he said there shouldn’t be problems in supplying the domestic market. He said that it was the result of the third consecutive year of the climate phenomenon ‘La Niña’ and forecast that the wheat harvest for 2022/2023 would come in at 16.5m tonnes (t), down from 22m t in 2021/2022.
