In brief: Panama extends fuel subsidy

*Panama’s government led by President Laurentino Cortizo has announced that the government will extend until 15 January 2023 a fuel subsidy which maintains a freeze on fuel prices to US$3.25 per gallon, costing US$320m. The government said that this was part of efforts to address the impact of the conflict in Ukraine and an additional push to continue the economic reactivation of sectors such as agriculture, livestock, manufacturing industry and fishing, among other sectors. The Cortizo government announced the price freeze in July amid nationwide protests over soaring living costs.
