Major data hack proves damaging for Mexico’s defence ministry

Mexico’s defence ministry (Sedena) suffered a major cyberattack on 29 September, when a group of hackers known as Guacamaya broke into its servers and released six terabytes of sensitive email data. The attack has exposed the weakness in Sedena’s defences, embarrassing those in charge of national security. The leaked data has also revealed unsavoury truths about the armed forces, detailing potential links with criminal groups and human rights abuses, while simultaneously documenting plans to further inflate the military’s already sizeable role under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
