SURINAME: Ruling coalition under strain

A little over two years since President Chandrikapersad Santokhi of the  Vooruitstrevende Hervormingspartij (VHP) came to power at the head of a coalition government including Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk’s Algemene Bevrijdings-en Ontwikkelingspartij (Abop) party, the Nationale Partij Suriname (NPS), and the Pertjajah Luhur (PL), strains in the coalition are beginning to tell with the NPS threatening to pull out.
