The Paraguayan government has confirmed that Osvaldo Villalba, one of the main leaders of the Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo (EPP) insurgent group, was killed in a shootout with the security forces at the weekend. Villalba’s death is another major blow to the EPP, which has continued to operate in areas of northern Paraguay despite the attempts by successive governments to dismantle the group. It will ease some of the public pressure on the government led by President Mario Abdo Benítez to eliminate the threat posed by the EPP, but it will not completely lift it.
