DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Race for the presidency begins

The main opposition Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) has named Abel Martínez, mayor of Santiago de los Caballeros, the capital of Santiago province and the country’s second city, as its presidential candidate ahead of the general elections in May 2024. As it stands his prospects seem less than promising against President Luis Abinader, whose 2020 election victory for the Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) ended the PLD’s 16-year stranglehold on power. Abinader is widely expected to ride the wave of his popularity to a second term in office.
