Cristina Fernández back in the spotlight

Argentina’s Vice President Cristina Fernández made her long-awaited return to the political stage on 4 November after two months out of the public eye. Two months on from narrowly surviving an assassination attempt, Fernández delivered the closing speech at the regional convention of the Unión Obrera Metalúrgica (UOM) in Pilar, in the province of Buenos Aires, amid heightened security. To a chorus of “Cristina, presidenta!” she struck an electioneering note, extolling the achievements of “twelve and a half years” of Kirchnerista governments between 2003 and 2015, savaging the right-wing government led by Mauricio Macri (2015-2019) that followed, and keeping her distance from the present government led by President Alberto Fernández.
