ECUADOR: Security meltdown prompts harsh measures

Three Ecuadorean provinces are under strict emergency measures following a wave of seemingly coordinated violence on 1 November. President Guillermo Lasso has declared a state of exception covering the western provinces of Guayas, Esmeraldas, and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, imposing an 11pm curfew on approximately 4.3m people. The outbreak of violence, which saw car bombs detonated, five police officers killed, and a deadly prison riot, underlined the extent to which Ecuador, which had been comparatively peaceful, has been besieged by cartel violence over the past two years.
