In brief: EU announces aid for El Salvador in response to floods

*The European Union (EU) has announced that it has earmarked €150,000 (US$149,265) in humanitarian funding for El Salvador to help those most affected by the impact of Tropical Storm Julia which wreaked havoc as it passed through Central America last month. According to an EU press release, the funding is part of the EU’s global contribution to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) and will help the Red Cross in El Salvador provide necessary emergency assistance including access to drinking water and the distribution of hygiene kits, kitchen kits, mosquito nets, insect repellent, mats and blankets. It also provides for the distribution of cash assistance to enable families to meet their basic food needs and others during the recovery phase. The aid will directly benefit 3,500 people (700 families) in the departments of San Miguel, Usulután, La Paz, San Vicente and La Unión. According to the EU, in El Salvador, Julia affected about 9,000 people, left 10 people dead and 5,172 people living in shelters, of whom 239 people were still in shelters in Cuscatlán, Morazán, San Salvador and Usulután. Julia also damaged 440 homes and at least 10,000 manzanas (one manzana = 1.68 acres) of basic grains, vegetables and coffee.
