Ecuador and US hold political dialogue

Ecuador: On 16 November the US State Department’s Under Secretary for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland met Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso and Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguín to discuss priorities in the bilateral relationship and on the international agenda. According to a statement posted by the US embassy in Quito, the two sides conducted a Bilateral Expanded Political Dialogue in which they discussed mutual objectives to advance a positive global agenda during Ecuador’s non-permanent tenure on the United Nations Security Council beginning in 2023. Ecuador outlined its goals for the Alliance for Development in Democracy, which it joined during the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles in June 2022. According to the US embassy press release, each delegation “underscored the urgent need to combat international organised crime, cooperate on counternarcotics operations, and increase security in the region”. Holguín expressed his appreciation for the US rejection of recent violent attacks in Ecuador, stating that they were a reaction to security measures adopted by Ecuador’s government. The US embassy statement adds that the US “recognised Ecuador’s achievements in drug interdiction and destruction and committed to continued US support. Both delegations also discussed initiatives to benefit vulnerable populations, especially in Ecuador’s northern border provinces.”
