In brief: Nicaragua and Russia sign ‘roadmap’ on atomic energy

*Nicaragua’s government led by President Daniel Ortega and Russia’s state atomic energy corporation Rosatom have signed a roadmap for establishing a dialogue in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy. According to a Rosatom press release, the document was signed on the side-lines of the international forum Atomexpo-2022, taking place in Russia, by Aleksey Likhachev, Rosatom’s director general, and Nicaragua’s ambassador to Russia, Alba Azucena Torres. According to Rosatom, the roadmap defines concrete steps by both sides for the next two years “for the implementation of projects in the field of non-energy applications of nuclear energy in Nicaragua, as well as assessing the prospects for the implementation of projects in geothermal, hydro and wind power”. The same statement adds that the parties plan to “organise technical tours and seminars, undertake steps in education and personnel training, as well as in formation of public opinion in the field of nuclear energy”.
