* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures which show that in the third quarter of 2022, the unemployment rate stood at 3.4% of the economically active population – people over the age of 15 who are employed or seeking employment – equating to 2m people. This is down from 4.2% in the same quarter in 2021. In quarterly terms, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage point. Inegi also stated that the number of people in Mexico’s economically active population who were employed in Q3 2022 numbered 57.4m – 1.6m more than in the same quarter in 2021. According to Inegi, 4.6m people, or 8.1% of the employed population, were underemployed in the third quarter of 2022, meaning they had the capacity and need to work more hours. This is down from 12.9% in the same quarter in 2021.
