MEXICO: Political violence in the spotlight

Armed attacks in Mexico’s municipality of San Miguel Totalapan, Guerrero state left at least 20 dead on 5 October. The attacks appeared to target local government officials, with municipal mayor Conrado Mendoza Almeda of the opposition Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD), his father – also a former municipal mayor - and several municipal officials all killed. Photos circulating in the local press in the aftermath of the attack showed the municipal government building riddled with bullet holes in a stark reminder of the dangers facing Mexican politicians - and those working at the local level in particular.
