In brief: Ecuador announces roadmap for green hydrogen take-up

* Ecuador’s government, in conjunction with the Inter-American Development Bank (BID), has presented a roadmap for the production and use of green hydrogen as part of plans to introduce more renewable sources into the country’s energy matrix. The roadmap sets out a plan to convert green hydrogen into a competitive energy source as part of Ecuador’s contribution to the global goal of keeping climate change below the 2C target established under the 2015 Paris Agreement. Unveiling the roadmap, the deputy minister for electricity and renewable energy, Enith Carrión, said that “this implementation offers a vital opportunity to decarbonise sectors of the economy such as industry and transport” and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and methane. Other Latin American countries aiming to incorporate green hydrogen into their energy supply include Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Uruguay.
