Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro took a big political gamble on 3 December when he announced that young people imprisoned for their role in the 2021 protests against his predecessor, Iván Duque (2018-2022), would be released and declared ‘peace leaders’ (gestores de paz). Petro drew a fierce rebuke from opposition parties for the gesture, which will bestow a legal status normally associated with imprisoned armed combatants on protesters that the opposition has characterised as vandals and thugs.
