COLOMBIA: Pledge to release imprisoned protesters riles opposition

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro took a big political gamble on 3 December when he announced that young people imprisoned for their role in the 2021 protests against his predecessor, Iván Duque (2018-2022), would be released and declared ‘peace leaders’ (gestores de paz). Petro drew a fierce rebuke from opposition parties for the gesture, which will bestow a legal status normally associated with imprisoned armed combatants on protesters that the opposition has characterised as vandals and thugs. The government insists that amnesties and releases from prison will be decided on a case-by-case basis.
