Vice President Cristina Fernández was convicted of corruption on 6 December and handed down a six-year prison sentence. She was also given a lifetime ban on holding public office for defrauding the Argentine state. Although this was a long-awaited verdict, it is far from the end of the process. Fernández can, and will, appeal. A definitive sentence is improbable before the end of 2024. This means, she could still compete in next October’s general election.
