In brief: Quito Metro inaugurated in Ecuador

*The 22-km long Quito Metro, which will be Ecuador’s first underground transportation system, has been inaugurated. In the initial opening phase, the public will be able to visit the 15 metro stations, receiving guided tours and information about the stations. Trains will start operating on 5 January for users who create an online account and download a courtesy pass. Full commercial operations will begin in March. Quito mayor Santiago Guarderas tweeted that the metro would connect families “more quickly and safely”. Construction began on the metro in 2012. It was initially scheduled to be completed in 2020 but was delayed due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The metro will be operated by EOMMT S.A.S. a consortium made up of Metro de Medellín (Colombia) and France-based public transport operator Transdev.
