PANAMA: Key investment project in doubt

A “fatal precedent for the region”. This was the assessment by Panama’s chamber of mining (Camipa) following the recent collapse of talks over a contract between the government led by President Laurentino Cortizo and Canada’s First Quantum Minerals (FQM), which owns the major copper mine Cobre Panamá via its subsidiary Minera Panamá (MPSA). The dispute has cast doubt over what remains the biggest single private investment in the country, and a key driver of Panama’s economic growth.
