BRAZIL: Did the top court go too far?

Brazil’s supreme court (STF) has often been accused of ‘judicial activism’ and of making politicised decisions. The top court has faced this sort of criticism from governments across the political spectrum, although its run-ins with the government reached new heights during the Jair Bolsonaro administration (2019-2023), when the court frequently intervened – often with unilateral rulings – to contain the now former president on issues ranging from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic to human rights and the safeguarding of democracy.
