MEXICO: El Chapo’s son recaptured
Mexico’s government has arrested Ovidio Guzmán López – the son of the infamous former Sinaloa drug trafficking organisation (DTO) leader Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera. The 5 January capture of Guzmán López, a high-ranking Sinaloa DTO member, is a victory for Mexico’s government, following a humiliating failed attempt to arrest him in 2019 [WR-19-42]. The timing of the arrest was eye-catching, coming just days before US President Joe Biden touched down in Mexico, with efforts to tackle DTOs high on his agenda.
