*Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has said he has met with representatives of four Canadian companies and resolved the problems they had in relation to Mexico’s energy policies “without any obstacles”. This was part of a pledge that López Obrador made to Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau when he visited Mexico for the North American Leaders’ Summit (NALS) earlier this month. According to an official familiar with the matter consulted by Reuters, the four companies were pension fund; Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ); engineering, logistics and energy firm ATCO Ltd; and green energy companies Northland Power Inc and Canadian Solar Inc. In July, Canada and the US initiated dispute settlement consultations under the US-Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) on regional trade in relation to López Obrador’s nationalist energy policies, which they argue discriminate against foreign energy companies, particularly those dedicated to renewable energy generation. At the NALS, López Obrador agreed to meet with representatives of companies that had issues with his government’s energy policies and try to resolve them.
