POLITICS: PRD papers over split

The main opposition party in congress, the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD), concluded its tenth extraordinary party conference on 19 August with a couple of contradictory decisions. The party is split between radicals loyal to the party's former leader and presidential candidate, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and the pragmatists. The radicals do not recognise President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa's defeat of López Obrador in last year's presidential election.
