PERU: Boluarte at loggerheads with congress over elections

Tensions are mounting between Peru’s President Dina Boluarte and congress over the date for early presidential and congressional elections. Congress has reluctantly agreed to move elections forward from April 2026 to April 2024 but protesters insist that this is far too long to wait to try and move beyond the country’s current political crisis. Congress has twice rejected bills to bring elections forward to this year, which Boluarte is now insistent must happen.
