CHURCH & STATE: López Obrador supporters riot in Mexico City's cathedral

On 18 November, between 150 and 200 supporters of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the leftwing candidate defeated by Felipe Calderón Hinojosa in the presidential elections in 2006, rioted in Mexico's main cathedral on the Zócalo in Mexico City. The Roman Catholic Church responded by closing the cathedral; the López Obrador-supporting Mexico City administration government retorted that the church did not have the right to do this because the cathedral was a national monument.
