In brief: Mexico’s unemployment down in Q4

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures which show that in the fourth quarter of 2022, the unemployment rate stood at 3% of the economically active population – people over the age of 15 who are employed or seeking employment – equating to 1.8m people. This is down from 3.7% in the same quarter in 2021. In quarterly terms, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage point. Inegi stated that in Q4 of 2022, Mexico’s economically active population totalled 60.1m people - 1.4m more than in the fourth quarter of the previous year. In the fourth quarter, a total of 58.3m people were in employment, 1.7m more than in the same quarter of 2021. According to Inegi, this change was concentrated in commerce, with an increase of 279,000 people employed; manufacturing, with 260,000; and in restaurants and accommodation services, with 217,000.
