In brief: Colombia’s gov’t says it has repaid debts to international organisations

* Colombia’s deputy minister for multilateral affairs, Laura Gil, has said that President Gustavo Petro’s administration has repaid Col$115bn (US$23.48m) in debts to international organisations that it inherited from the government of former president Iván Duque (2018-2022). Gil did not specify which international organisations were repaid, but claimed that Colombia was so far behind on its obligatory payments that “in some international organisations, when the time came to vote our diplomats had to get up and leave”. She said that “we’ve resolved this – I’m pleased to share with the country that Colombia is up to date” on its payments.
