Protesters invade Suriname’s parliament and loot businesses

Several hundred protesters burst into the national assembly building in Paramaribo on 17 February, and subsequently went on a looting spree on the streets of the Surinamese capital. Storming government buildings appears to be in vogue at present but, although there were calls for President Chandrikapersad Santokhi to resign, the motivation of the majority of the protesters seems to have been more economic than overtly political.
