In brief: Peru-Mexico tensions rise as ambassador recalled

* Peru’s President Dina Boluarte has recalled Peru’s ambassador in Mexico, Manuel Gerardo Talavera Espinar, in a dramatic escalation of mounting bilateral tensions. Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has regularly attacked Boluarte for the violent crackdown on anti-government protesters, and has vocally supported her predecessor, Pedro Castillo (2021-2022), whose attempt in December 2022 to illegally shut down congress resulted in his impeachment and arrest. Boluarte said that “with his declarations, Mr López violates the principle in international law of non-interference in domestic affairs, as well as those relating to the defence and promotion of democracy”. With “definitive withdrawal” of the Peruvian ambassador, Boluarte said that diplomatic relations between Peru and Mexico will be restricted to business matters.
