In brief: Colombian regulator opens investigation into Viva Air

* Colombia’s transport regulator, the Superintendencia de Transporte (ST), has opened an investigation into the low-cost Colombian airline Viva Air, which has caused major disruption by unexpectedly grounding its fleet. The ST said that the investigation will look into allegations that Viva “did not accompany that suspension with the provision of complete, true, timely and precise information to all of its users” who had purchased tickets but were prevented from flying. Viva claims that it was financially unable to continue operating flights after Colombia’s aviation authority, Aeronaútica Civil, delayed a verdict on a proposed merger between Viva and Colombian airline Avianca. Other airlines have argued that the planned merger would breach competition law.
