The challenges surrounding Brazil’s Yanomami crisis

Distressing images of emaciated indigenous Yanomami people came to light in January, shocking Brazil and the world. The pictures of severely malnourished children and elderly adults laid bare the severity of the crisis afflicting the Yanomami, a situation aggravated by neglect under former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023). The new government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has vowed to address the crisis and its root causes – particularly illegal gold mining – but this comes with many challenges.
