In brief: Brazil expects imminent end to suspension of beef exports to China

* Brazil’s agriculture minister, Carlos Fávaro, has said that Brazil is in “the final phase” of negotiations with China to end a Chinese suspension on the import of Brazilian beef, which was implemented on 23 February following the detection of a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, also known as ‘mad cow disease’). In remarks reported by the local media, Fávaro said that “it’s a matter of following protocol; we followed protocol and demonstrated the security of our system [and] we’re going to restore the market with China and other countries”.  Iran, Thailand and Jordan have also suspended imports of Brazilian beef, but Fávaro insisted that lost revenue caused by the export suspension will be recovered over the course of this year. The government is planning to request alterations to Brazil’s trade protocol with China; Carlos Ernesto Agustin, an advisor to the agriculture ministry, told Reuters on 7 March that “we will talk in the future and try to change the protocol, there is no need to be so extensive”.
