PANAMA/REGION: Warnings over surge in Darién crossings

On 9 March, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) cited official figures showing that in the first eight weeks of 2023 around 49,000 people crossed the Darién Gap – a dense jungle in Panama bordering Colombia – which IFRC said was “five times more than in the previous period in 2022”.
