* Mexico’s national poultry farmers’ union (UNA), an industry group, has called on the Mexican government to reach an agreement with the US over genetically modified (GM) corn before resorting to a dispute resolution panel. The US requested technical consultations with Mexico under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on 6 March in relation to Mexican plans to ban GM corn for human consumption. Mexico had previously planned to phase out the use and import of all GM products and the herbicide glyphosate by January 2024 but has since toned down the restrictions. UNA stated that competitive access to agricultural materials such as yellow corn, much of which is genetically modified, is essential for “ensuring the sufficient and timely supply of eggs and chicken for all Mexicans”. According to UNA, Mexico is the greatest per capita consumer of fresh eggs worldwide, with 23kg consumed per capita each year.
