MEXICO: Polarisation overshadows commemorative event

Large crowds flocked to the main Zócalo square in Mexico City (CDMX) on 18 March for an event marking the 85th anniversary of the nationalisation of oil in Mexico. The event served as an opportunity for President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to showcase his popularity and extol the achievements of his government. However, an incident involving the burning of a cardboard figure of supreme court (SCJN) president Norma Piña has cast a shadow over proceedings and drawn criticism of the government.
