Brazil & Southern Cone - March 2023

Introduction

The March 2023 issue of the Latin American Regional Report: Brazil & Southern Cone focuses first on Brazil and the actions and challenges of the new government of three-times President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. After the initial upset caused by the 8 January bolsonarista attacks on the government in Brasília, one of the headline-grabbing events of Lula’s term so far has been the crisis afflicting the indigenous Yanomami people in the north of the country. A first article outlines the response taken by the Lula administration in the face of the humanitarian crisis, which the current president blames on his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023), and highlights the deep-rooted challenges that come with trying to end illegal mining on protected lands in the Amazon.
