PERU: Boluarte faces new probe into campaign financing

Peru’s President Dina Boluarte has taken great pains to distance herself from Pedro Castillo, under whom she served as vice president until his impeachment and arrest in December. Yet her pivot to the right and the heavy-handed crackdown on protests sparked by Castillo’s removal may not be enough to disassociate herself from the corruption of his government. On 28 March the attorney general’s office announced that it is investigating Boluarte in relation to allegations that she received campaign donations and personal payments during the 2021 election campaign from a member of a corruption racket which reportedly operated at the highest levels of the Castillo administration.
