VENEZUELA/GUYANA: Opposition seeks leverage in Essequibo dispute

Venezuela’s longstanding claim to the Essequibo – a 160,000km² expanse covering around two-thirds of the territory of its neighbour Guyana – received another legal setback on 6 April in a 14-1 ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). There will be no quick resolution of the dispute, but Venezuela’s opposition political parties are looking for ways to turn it to their advantage.
