In brief: Russia and Nicaragua further boost ties

*Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has paid a visit to Nicaragua where he met President Daniel Ortega, First Lady and Vice President Rosario Murillo, Finance Minister Iván Acosta, and Laureano Ortega, the dynasty’s most prominent son and a presidential adviser on investment. A statement by Nicaragua’s state media el19digital cites Lavrov, who is currently on a tour of Latin America, as referring to the establishment of “important agreements in areas such as education, transport, agriculture and health.” Lavrov also highlighted recent agreements signed last month during a visit by Nicaragua’s foreign minister, Denis Moncada to Moscow including on the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes, among other things. A report by Russia’s state news agency Tass following Lavrov’s visit to Nicaragua yesterday (19 April) says the two sides also expressed satisfaction with the development of cooperation regarding “supplies of Russian cars, fertilisers, and food” and “the implementation of transport infrastructure projects”. It cites Lavrov as saying “we discussed in detail the development of our relations in the material sphere - in the trade-and-economic and investment sectors”. It also cites him as highlighting the “key role” played by an intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation, whose co-chairs will hold the next meeting on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, an annual Russian business event, taking place in June.
