* Brazil’s labour ministry has published the latest figures from the national employment registry (Novo Caged), which show that a net 195,171 new jobs were created in the formal sector in March. This net increase was more than double the number of new jobs in March 2022, when 98,786 jobs were created. As of this March, the total figure for those in formal employment in Brazil was around 42.97m. The net increase was registered in 22 states and in four of the five main job categories measured. The category which saw the most job creation was the services sector, with 122,323 job openings, and within this category public administration (+44,913) and education (+22,334) saw the most job creation. In terms of regional figures, job creation in March was highest in the traditionally wealthier and more populous south-eastern region, with the state of São Paulo leading with 50,768 jobs created, followed by the states of Minas Gerais (38,730 jobs) and Rio de Janeiro (19,427). However, some north-eastern states registered net losses, with a decrease of 5,266 jobs in Pernambuco.
