In brief: Brazil’s Embraer to produce Swedish fighter jets

* The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer has begun production for a new line of Gripen fighter jets, in partnership with the Swedish manufacturer Saab. Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Defence Minister José Múcio attended the launch event for the opening of the Gripen production line in Embraer’s factory in Gavião Peixoto municipality, São Paulo state. Under the contract between the Brazilian and Swedish companies, 36 Gripen aircraft will be delivered to Brazil’s air force (FAB), 15 of which will be manufactured by Embraer on Brazilian soil. All 36 jets are expected to be manufactured and delivered by the end of 2027. Also attending the launch event, FAB Lieutenant-Brigadier Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno hailed the Embraer-Saab partnership as “the concretisation of an ambitious project that translates into the transference of technology, the creation of jobs, and the consequent development of Brazil’s aerospace sector.” Brazilian engineers, who will oversee the Embraer production line, received technical training at Saab’s manufacturing facilities in Linköping, Sweden.
