Bolivia’s environment minister Juan Santos Cruz had been defying political gravity for two months, battling allegations of corruption from the media, government agencies, and rival factions within the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). On 13 May he tendered his resignation, which was followed with a government statement confirming that Santos had been accused of illicit enrichment amounting to over B$20m (US$2.88m).
