PARAGUAY: Continuity doesn’t mean stability

A clear election victory by a former finance minister from a traditional party in one of the fastest-growing economies in Latin America should be good news and cause to expect continuity, if not some optimism. And yet the election victory on 30 April of Santiago Peña of Paraguay’s ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC), with a lead of more than 16 percentage points, didn’t exactly trigger euphoria, neither on financial markets nor on the streets of Asunción.
