Mexico: On 10 May, the chief officer for North America at Mexico’s foreign ministry (SRE), Roberto Velasco, and the director of Mexico’s agency for international development and cooperation (AMEXCID), Laura Elena Carrillo visited the White House to explore “new collaborative policies” to address the root causes of migration. A statement from the Mexican government emphasised the importance of building on the bilateral ‘Sembrando Oportunidades’ programme, which was introduced in December 2021 and aims to address the root causes of irregular migration from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. In light of the lifting of Title 42, which took place the day after the meeting on 11 May, Velasco celebrated the progress made by Mexico and the US on migration issues and reiterated the importance of continuing to work to create and strengthen legal pathways for migrants, in accordance with the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection, which was launched at the Summit of the Americas in June 2022. “Faced with the challenges of migratory flows that we observe and will continue to observe in the region, we must increase labour mobility channels, as well as protection policies to move in the right direction towards a more orderly, safe and regular mobility,” said Velasco. During the meeting, the Mexican delegations also proposed an increase in financing to address the root cause of migration, as well as “the need to reinforce plural dialogue with the entire region”.
