ECUADOR: Presidential aspirants rush to declare candidacies

The lineup for Ecuador’s 20 August presidential election is beginning to take shape as candidates throw their hats into the ring. So far, the most notable development is a split in the indigenous voting bloc which looks likely to boost the political left at the expense of the indigenous Pachakutik party, which came a close third in the first round of the 2021 election.
